ClearWater's 11th Annual Watershed Cleanup Day

Each year, ClearWater participates in the world-wide recognition of Earth Day by organizing a Watershed Cleanup Day to eliminate the excess waste plaguing Centre County's watersheds. This event was initiated in 1997 with the collection and disposal of 17 tons of trash in the Spring Creek Watershed. Since our kick off year, we have removed over 1,000 tons of trash from Spring Creek, Halfmoon Creek, Beech Creek, Penns Creek, and Little Fishing Creek Watersheds with an amazing 410 tons in 2005 and 343 tons in 2006 alone.

Volunteers gather (rain or shine) to remove harmful material from sinkholes, roadsides, illegal dumpsites, and stream banks. Removing such material helps rid groundwater of dangerous pollutants, strengthening the surrounding environment and reducing the need for local governments to spend unnecessary tax dollars on cleanup that can easily be taken care of by Centre County residents.

1 in 100 Know What It is to Be Homeless: U.S. Figures May Not Show Scope of Problem, Advocates Say

Mar. 4--One in 100 Americans will spend a night this year in emergency housing or on the streets, estimates homeless expert Martha Burt.

"We estimate 1 percent of the population (and) 10 percent of the poor children," said Burt, principal research associate at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C.

Burt was key adviser for a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development report Wednesday to Congress on American homelessness. The report counted 754,000 Americans living in emergency shelters, transitional housing or on the streets in early 2005.

Add in families doubled up or tripled up to keep a roof over their heads, said Milwaukee homeless advocate Joe Volk, and those numbers would soar. Milwaukee has 2,000 homeless people according to HUD -- and maybe more like 12,000 according to Volk, executive director of Community Advocates Inc.

The Wind Bank and the Battery

When it was announced at the beginning of January that Australian researchers had developed a kind of wind battery – an "electricity storage system that promises to transform the role of wind energy" – I immediately thought of a scene from Virgil's Aeneid.

There, we read about a place called "Aeolia, the weather-breeding isle," where all the winds of the world are stored:Here in a vast cavern King Aeolus Rules the contending winds and moaning gales As warden of their prison. Round the walls They chafe and bluster underground. The din Makes a great mountain murmur overhead. High on a citadel enthroned, Scepter in hand, he molifies their fury, Else they might flay the sea and sweep away Land masses and deep sky through empty air. In fear of this, Jupiter hid them away In caverns of black night.

New Technology Manages Social Responsibility Initiatives

ST. PAUL, Minn., March 6, 2007 -- The Global Reporting Initiative, a large network of experts in global citizenship issues, has identified more than 100 indicators of environmental, social and economic responsibility that organizations report. The indicators range from energy consumption, wildlife habitat protection and greenhouse gas emissions to workforce diversity, customer privacy complaints and political donations.

Lawson Software has announced a new initiative that will provide organizations and companies with software to help them manage their growing array of environmental and social programs. Lawson's Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative aims to harness information technology to automate and integrate the management of these programs to help companies meet their social and environmental targets, whether government-mandated or company-set.
